NOWRA firefighters have begun responding to calls from their new fire station after nine months of operating at a temporary site.

Firefighters were relocated from their Bridge Rd premises last November during the remediation of an adjoining, former gasworks site that was at the centre of a cancer cluster scare.

They were moved to the NSW Rural Fire Service Control Centre on Albatross Rd while awaiting an upgrade of a new station in Norfolk Ave, South Nowra.

NSW Fire Brigades Commissioner Greg Mullins yesterday said the officers had started responding from their new fire station.

The new facility has undergone more than $100,000 worth of renovations and includes state-of-the-art satellite communications facilities.

"This will continue to ensure reliable and efficient emergency responses to incidents in and around Nowra," Mr Mullins said.

He said they were looking to secure a second Nowra site north of the Norfolk Ave property.

"We are close to finalising a lease for a second site, which will be a smaller supporting station, from which some of Nowra's on-call firefighters will respond to incidents," Mr Mullins said.

"This will ensure rapid response times to North Nowra and Bomaderry."
